I Drove the Mazda for a year before it developed a slip between third and over-drive while accelerating on the highway, I then attempting to change the transmission fluid, only to find out that i couldn't get at the 6 liters in the torque converter. After i changed the three liters that i could i took the car for a drive and it started acting up in the lower gears around town like slipping into second and not wanting to shift. Over the next couple days around town at slow driving speeds the problem developed to having first and second ONLY, It had completely lost third gear EVEN if I shifted manually... A whining quickly developed sounding like a dry power steering pump, But from under the car behind the wheel some behind the cover on the driver side underneath. Cars been sitting ever since but i have the feeling that it is something simple like the transmission pump or Vacuum lines. I Would appreciate anyone that Has anyone had the same problem

Kubla; I'm not a transmission guy, but I've had it explained to me this way; Transmission fluid has a high detergent base. When draining the old stuff out and replacing it with new, the new fluid 'washes away' the built up gum and varnish deposits and the clutches start slipping. It's one of those 'Catch 22' circumstances. If you don't change the fluid, you will have a problem. If you do change the fluid, you may have a problem. In your case, you did have the problem. At 300K, I don't think that the transmission owes you anything. Loren SW Washington

Just to add to Loren's advice, the whole goal is to change it early and regularly and it will never cause a problem and will extend the life much further. The risks come in when it's left in too long. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
