1996 F150 5speed problem

Here's the vitals:
'96 Ford F150 2wd 5speed wO/D
I have basically lost 1st and second gears.
With a bit of finesse I can manage to find 1st gear but then it's almost impossible to get it back to neutral.
ie; The stick moves to second but it remains in 1st.
When stuck in 1st I can get into 3rd, 4th, 5th or reverse but that locks the trans. (I have to be stopped to do that of course)
Starting out in 3rd is possible but I would like to keep my clutch.
I hope it's just the linkage in the top of the gearbox (the stick goes into the top of the box just like a big truck) and therefore an easy fix.
Any ideas?
