So I have a 1996 GMC c1500 suburban w/ 5.7l that is stuck in park. I removed the lock solenoid from under the dash that stops you from shifing without pushing the brake, i replaced the nuetral safety switch on the transmission, i tried rocking the truck back and forth and nothing is working.. any ideas on what may be causing this? It has been getting a little sticky taking it out of park over the last couple of weeks until now (engine has 4k miles and trans has 250kish, and i installed a rebuilt valve body when i replaced the engine) any help would be appreciated. -Marco

Hello, To pin point the problem, disconnect the shift cable at the transmission and see if you can move the transmission out of park. If you can, problem is not the trans, maybe the cable.

Marco. gsferro is the expert in the trans. Out of the box (that's me) if you need to move this thing and it's OK for that. Engine off try with brake applied and parking brake applied turning key just slightly towards the start position and turn key just towards "start" position. Now shift to "N" it should shift to that and start and continue to shift until you go back to park which you should have to, to remove key. I've tried this ONLY on one (Chevrolet of this) not broken without touching the brake and it works, Tom

Hello, Ok, if that linkage still will not move with the cable disconnected, the transmission pan will have to be dropped to see where the problem is

OK, thanks.. Also when I replaced the neutral safety switch, I did notice it seemed to be leaking a small amount of tranny fluid from the linkage shaft. Not sure if that's common or not, but it was enough to build up on the backside of the unit.. -Marco

Hello, Yes that is common for that seal to leak, special tools are required to change out that seal so the shaft does not get damaged. Gary

So I pulled the pan, i dont see anything obvious except for a small concave black O-ring that was sitting in the bottom of the pan. i have no idea what its from and is very sharp on the inner ring like it was ground off or wearing on something..

Hello, Ok, so when you move the linkage, is it still tight? do you see anything while moving the linage? Not sure what that rubber is, almost looks it came from the manifold switch, which is the part on the valvebody with the 5 bolts in it. Gary

the linkage will only rotate maybe an eigth of an inch, and the piece i found in the pan shown in the pic is metal not rubber. i tried putting it up on jack stands and used a bar to gently try and rotate the yoke back and forth but its not budging.

Take the detent roller off, (the clicker held on with the 13mm bolt) and see if the problem could be the manual valve or the linkage rod. Gary Thinking about that piece in the pan, may have come off of the linkage arm, see if the spring on the arm seems loose

I am not sure what this arm/spring does (i wish i knew more about transmissions) but it was definitely the cause of it being stuck. the problem is im not sure just how this arm is supposed to move correctly. once it is moved off to the side a little, it comes free and the linkage then rotates properly but once i move it back to park, the plunger looking end gets stuck inside the bracket again (see pictures)

Well I now know that it is part of the park lock linkage, but i'm still not sure what would cause it to get stuck in the bracket like that. Given that I don't know a ton about trannys i'm reluctant to just start taking things apart (which is my usual MO lol) and I can't seem to find any diagrams or references that acurately show how this assembly works.. Thanks for all the help!

Hello, That spring keeps tension to put the car into park if it;s not lined up. If the end of the rod is broken off, the it may not move out of park because the rod will move but the spring and other parts will not
