i relpaced my original transmission in my 96 cavalier Z24 last year with a used one ( approx. 90,000km on it ) along with a new clutch, since then, some minor grinding has occurred. i was backing up the other day and was cut off by another driver, in panic , dumped the clutch and stalled, when i went to reverse after starting again, car went forward noticed there was now a lot of play with the shifter, very loose in every gear. driving forward 1st through 4th is fine, when shifting into 5th, it gears down to 3rd. could it be a linkage problem? your help would be very appreciated

You should visually inspect the shift cables at the transaxle and at the shifter lever assembly. Maybe a cable grommet fell apart. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

It almost sounds like one of the shift levers is jammed in a gear but usually when that happens the only time it runs normal is when you are trying to use that gear.... Since the problem happened after a stall. I would have a helper go thru all the gears verifying the all the levers were moving from one gear to another and then stopping in the neutral position..... This of course after you've made sure there is no obvious problems with the shifter cables....
