i have a 1997 chevy s 10 4x4 .i was just driveing down the road .Doing about 30 miles a hour .Truck down shifted into second wouldnt shift back to drive .Pulled off the road, turned the truck off.Took off again the truck shifted fine.A couple of days later samething. No lights came on nothing ,just would,nt shift. A friend of mine told me it was my ignition,so ichanged the steering collum.Truck ran fine for two to three weeks .Today it started again.Truck has a 120,000 miles on it .Transmission shifts great when shifts .I just cant,t believe its the transmission.Every time i shut it off ,andtake off again it shifts fine .Maybe for aday maybe for a week or two ,but i know its going to do it again. All i just remembered the speedometer quits working ,when it wont shift as soon as it shifts it starts working again.Sometimes if i realy get on it .It will shift. I have some knowledge about cars ,but i dont, have a clue. i,m ready for some help .ANYONE

When your speedometer looks like this (link deleted)it is impossible for the computer to know how fast you're going. And if the computer doesn't know how fast you're it doesn't know where to set the shift point on the transmission. It then goes into a fail safe or limp-in mode and stays in one gear. When you are turning off the key and re-starting, the speedometer starts working and the truck shifts again. So to start with you should check the speed sensor and all of the wiring and connections from the speed sensor to the PCM. You'll probably find that is where the problem lies. Good Luck

i also had one do that and it was in the second ignition wire from the ignition switch, the vehicle would start and run fine but without power on that wire, it puts the transmission into a limp home mode. its a white wire from the ignition switch. not sure but happened to me so just mentioning it.
