I just bought a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT v6 3.0, has 188,600 miles on it. It seems to run fine. Once you drive it for about 20-30 minutes, the overdrive light will start flashing. Once you come to a complete stop and take off again, it will shift hard into 2nd, unless I turn it off and back on at the stop, which is the only way to make it stop. But it has the flashing O/D light with every drive after driving it for a little while. What could it be? Can't be anything too serious because it shifts fine when it's not flashing.

The transmission has a serious internal problem. the flashing overdrive light is how it makes you aware of it. You need to have it diagnosed by a trans specialist that has the software to read the TCM. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
