Turn the key to the 1st position past off but not to the on position, put the selector in neutral, now turn the key all the way & start the truck and you should be able to go to drive now... If this works, there is a problem the selector lockout circuit.........

Sidom - Question on that as there are two similar vehicles in my custody - one my own. It inexplicably while waiting in line at a drive up window I put it in park, idling and it wouldn't come back out! Shut engine off and tried again - nothing. Finally it just worked?? Question is - is the method you just explained the way to override the lock out? Brake lights were working and it only happened that once but what an embarrassment! TIA as I never heard of that, Tom

Unfortunately I can't tell you what the exact problem was. I've only run into this 3 times. Twice was in the shop parking lot and both declined the diag after I showed them how to move the truck. The 3rd time was in the Magic Mountain parking lot and I wasn't prepared to check it there. What I found funny was, while the 2 at that shop didn't even say thanks, the guy at MM tried to force $50 on me, which I refused to take (way too much for that). It was finally settled at him giving my girls $20 "for an ice cream" (and that was only because he literally refused to take no for an answer)....... This is probably what my battle plan would be to start out with and depending on what popped up, go from there.. You know Tom, I never did look at the brk lights on any of them.....I probably should've but I guess I had a brain fart Update......After thinking about this for a bit, I think I would also make sure the P/N switch is closing when in the park position..........

if you r stuck in park u may have broken the cable or have pivot points in your linkage that r worn and binding, preventing movement u can lube some of the pivot points w/white lithium grease or internal problems may have occured inside the tranny hard to say w/o being there
