2000 Dodge Ram Slipping Sign In

I have a 2000 Dodge Ram that groans horribly when put into reverse, not as bad in drive. The transmission is definitely slipping in all gears. I can be driving at 55 mph and all of a sudden it goes to 300rpm and I get nothing. If I pull over and turn the car off for a minute I can usually get it going again. I've talked to two different people and one said it could be as simple as the transmission filter getting clogged and needing changed, the other said it sounded electronic. Any other ideas out there? I hate to spend the $65 to get the codes read and have it be the filter that I could have spent that $65 on.

Yesterday tried to drive it in to get the codes read and it completely stopped moving. I'm having the tranny rebuilt.
