2000 Ford Ranger Transmission or Speed Sensor? Sign In

Hello,

My 3 liter, V6 Ford Ranger is having problems. The ABS light, Engine light and O/D light all come on at the same time. Sometimes when the automatic transmission shifts, it slams hard into 2nd gear. After that it's OK sometimes, but other times it slips out and then back in to gear. Then there are the times that it doesn't shift at all so I manually shifted it from DRIVE to 2nd. When it engages, I shift up to drive. In both cases, the speedometer acts a little weird - it works fine sometimes, doesn't work at all other times, and then there are the times that it keeps jumping all over the place.

The first time this happened, I was told that the speed sensor on the rear axle was the culprit so I had it checked out. There were some metal shavings which were cleaned out and the sensor was replaced. It seems to have fixed the problem for about six months, then started again about four months ago. I had the sensor replaced again (no metal shavings that time) and it was fine again until yesterday. Now it's happening again.

Is this a problem with the sensor? Or is the sensor just a temporary fix which is hiding a bigger problem with the transmission?

Thanks very much,

Franc
