2000 Ford Windstar Transmission
|

2000 Ford windstar 3.8.
Driving on the freeway at @70 mph and it suddenly stopped accelerating. Able to coast it to shoulder but when we attempted to put it in park it rolled, had to use the parking brake to keep it from moving. The engine light is on but the codes that we are getting are engine codes not transmission codes(fuel to lean). The trans fluid looks good still. We have looked under the hood while having someone shift the gears inside, everything moves as usual. It will not move under its own power in any gear. It had not many any unusual noises or had any unusual odors before the incident.

Inspect your CV axles. If you one of your axles is broke, the vehicle won't move or stay locked in park.
Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

 I never thought of the CV axle. I will definitely be checking that tomorrow. Thank you so much for your help. Also is this a repair that can be done by the home mechanic or does it require special tools?

We checked both cv axles, the both look new actually ( they still have the stickers on them and them and the boots on both ends of each are completely intact). They have little play in them when you attempt to move them. We jacked it up and removed the wheels to inspect the axles and in every gear the entire front axle spins both ways. When I shift it back into park it makes a grinding noise, it does not make a noise in any other gear. Any other less expensive suggestions or am I looking at replacing the transmission.

It's not really the condition of the axle that you're looking for. You want to look and see if the axle is fully seated into the transmission. I would be even more suspicious now with new axles. It's an installation problem.

To check to make sure it is seated right I would have to take it completely apart, correct? I really want this to be what is wrong, just need to know how to make sure I know what we are looking for.

No, you just have to look where it goes into the transmission and see if the housing butts right up against the transmission on both sides of the car.

Sorry if I am sounding stupid, this is a new type of project for me I usually just do my own engine repairs. How do I check to make sure the housings are butted right up to the trans, pull the boots back?

No, where the outside housing inserts into the transmission.

If you grab the inner CV joint you shouldn't be able to pull the axle shaft out of the transmission with your hands.
This part of the axle should be all the way into the transmission on both sides:

Sorry it has taken so long to update but the car is not currently parked at my house. I finally got out to where it is parked so here is what I have found. On the passengers side, behind the inner boot, If I grab the axle I can pull it in and out significantly. Where I am grabbing it is that thicker part behind the boot before the area that is circle in the previous post. I have not removed the wheel hub yet and am assuming that is the reason I can not just pull the axle completely out of the transmission. Am I finally on the right track? Thank you guys so much for your help with this!
