I have a 2002 Kia Sedona Mini Van. I have read about problems with the speed sensor causing the car to force into 3rd(?) gear. I seemed to be having this problem intermittantly. I got the speed sensor replaced, and thought it was fixed but about two weeks later(Sometimes it was a few weeks between these events before getting replaced) it happened again. Now it happens every time I drive my car. Okay now to the info that may help me get an answer. It happens in roughly the same spot, on the way to work, every day. It also happens in roughly the same spot on my way home. My commute to work is flat, so no incline/declines. I started noticing this happening and decided to look at my engine temperature, and guess when it would happen when driving to other locations(not knowing exactly where due to geography) and I can call it to within a minute or so. Once my temps go above the first line, it goes clunk and drops me into 3rd(?). Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be? I am thinking it could be the cable over heating and causing some sort of short. Is that plausible? Or could it be that the computer is just messed up? EDITED TO ADD CAR SPECS:
- 3.5L V6 engine
- Automatic transmission

One of the default gears is third. If the transaxle is defaulting, there should be a trouble code(s) stored. Getting that code(s) may point you in a direction for diagnoses. It's possible the problem could be temperature related. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

My mechanic said it was a bad speed sensor and replaced it. I'll take it back and see what they say.
