The first thing you need to do is shut off your cap locks. We get yelled at enough around here.

I live in Florida so 4WD is not something I repair very often. There are a couple of other people here far more experienced than me in that area and I will defer to them. I have moved your question to the transmission category where it should be.

I am in snow country and don't really know jack about this set up. "Electronic" should only mean it switches from those but mechanically is making changes or should at gear case. I don't think this engages hubs but not sure. For lack of any better suggestions go look underside and see if something is plain obvious with wiring. Have you done battle with getting stuck recently. Look for physical problems. I would have guessed default would be back to plain 2WD??

by elect. i'm referring to dash switch as opposed to lever actuated, truck is very well maintained. can't see any obvious damage, broken wires, vac leaks etc. I can hear it shift from 4h, 4l and to 2wd but it is definitely still in 4wd haven't had any snow battles but i did just put new tires on last week

Re: 2004 f250 stuck in 4wd Sign In

I've seen a couple of those with bad hubs. If you get one bad one then you won't get 4WD.....Just jack up the frt and see if both hubs will lock in the frt axles.

Lock the hubs & then turn the wheel and look at the u joint of the frt axle. When it's unlocked, you should be able to spin the wheel & the frt axle won't turn, when its locked, the axle should turn...

I think he said he has the opposite problem Brian. It won;t come OUT of 4WD.

Yea I just saw that but still jack it up and make sure that the frt axles don't spin with the hubs are unlocked. In the unlocked position, the u joints on the frt axle shouldn't move when the wheel is turned

Re: 2004 f250 stuck in 4wd Sign In

Ok something isn't making sense here......I don't do a ton of 4WD work but with the 2 systems you have auto hubs & manual ones... The manual ones you have to pyshically get out and lock in the hubs to get the 4WD to work. Auto hubs the axle is always locked in at the hubs and is engaged in the transfer case.

If you have manual hubs, that is in the free position and you can see that the frt axle isn't turning with when the wheel is moved then you won't have 4WD.

What make you think that it's stuck in 4WD?

Re: 2004 f250 stuck in 4wd Sign In

Just a note that this truck just had new tires so wheels were off. IDK as said on this but do the hubs come off with the wheels? Maybe something went wrong with having the wheels off + back on for the tires? - T

Re: 2004 f250 stuck in 4wd Sign In

several indicators suggest the truck is in 4wd 1. cannot freely spin front axles 2. banging and jerking when turning on dry pavement 3. whrrrrrrrr noise @ 70mph Ford trucks have manual hubs (at least mine does as do most others) I can switch from 2 to 4wd with a selector switch on the dash. I have never needed to get out and manually lock my hubs. The hubs should not have been disturbed during tire replacement and I have physically verified they are in the unlock position

Re: 2004 f250 stuck in 4wd Sign In

Ok....If you can do everything from the cab then you have auto hubs....The manual ones have that big switch in the center of the hub you have to rotate 180° to "lock in" the hubs....

So yours uses the transfer case to lock in 4WD. If all the lights are doing what they should and nothing is flashing then electrically it sounds good and may be mechanically bound up.....

I'll see if I can pull something up on your system

Re: 2004 f250 stuck in 4wd Sign In

The truck cannot be in 4wd if the hubs are unlocked. That turns it into a 2wd truck.

Re: 2004 f250 stuck in 4wd Sign In

It sounds like you are going to be looking at a transfer case problem, since all the lights are doing what they are suppose, electrically there no problems being seen.

The transfer case is probably being bound up mechanically, one of the forks is staying engaged.
