Hello... I have a 2005 Holden Astra hatch. Someone else was driving it simply lost all power. She pulled over and I came to the scene to find that the car can be started without issue, you can put the auto transmission into drive but when you hit the accelerator it will rev but not move. Occasionally it will move a metre or 2 but then nothing. Also, where it shows what gear the auto is in on the dash will go from 1 thru to 4 when you rev. I have a video but don't seem to be able to attach to this thread. Ive cant seem to attached a pic of the icon that is being triggered on the dash but its the one that has a generic car shape with a spanner on it The car sat without being driven for a few months so not sure if this has anything to do with it. Once every 10-15 times of starting the car, it will sort of bog down as it should when you put it into drive but every other time it doesnt even seem to engage I've tried all the basics but know little about cars to dig any deeper

Hi, I don't think any version of this car is sold to the US where this site is based but still things you should do on the information given. Check the transmission fluid level the way the owner's manual suggests. The symbol you mentioned lit up on your instrument panel is to tell you of a fault the car's computer has noticed and warning you it needs to have a code read and the reason for that fixed. This site does have a transmission expert who probably will stop by but suggest since it isn't moving if the fluid or possible if an "auto/manual shift" type gearbox - it's low or simply linkage isn't connected for some reason. Either way this is going to need some professional attention so would concentrate on finding the place you'd like to take it to which mean tow it there of course. Another suggestion about time just sitting: If you know it going to just sit for 3 months or more ahead of time it's best to have a friend or person simply run the vehicle, drive it and put it back where you store it periodically. Longer than that you really should be thinking about preparing a car for longer term storage and always best if to store inside a climate controlled garage, Tom

Thanks for taking the time to reply Tom. I live in very rural Australia so was hoping to get a pretty solid idea of what the issue was before organising it to get to a garage. Maybe unavoidabe though. I did have to get it towed home obviously and the mechanic that did that looked at the fluid, mentioned there was enough of it and did say it smelt a bit funny but didnt seem to be too concerned about that being the cause of the issue. Of course it could be though

On closer inspection I have just found a reasonable sized oil leak coming from trans. Its not dripping alot but seems to be a fair bit on the under body which only recently had a full wash down so was clean prior to today

OK - just the orientation I'm in the North-East area of US so opposite sides of the world - is not the issue just a time and hemisphere switch. I have to trust that your "mechanic" checked level properly. Some done in neutral or some in park position all are checked with vehicle level and most with a warm engine and transmission. Odor and color are clues of trouble as the oils do not like being too hot, change color and any slipping can make for serious troubles quickly. It's an hydraulic machine of its own and frequently its own specialty area of automotive repair. You say "rural" tells me your a quite a distance from where most professional shops would be? If that's where you ordinarily live you really need to already have plans for when you need help and even some routine required maintenance. Just to retrieve those code reading requires a code reader capable of doing just that is quite costly so usually only an active repair shop would have the latest correct ones for your vehicle. What did your "mechanic" suggest you do if anything? Doesn't seem like you or that mechanic are equipped to take this on for the repair at all so if I were you next plan is where it will go and how to get it to where it can be fixed up a possible diagnosis that your transmission is in need of an overhaul - a costly, major repair to the car or maybe something simpler we don't know right now with information on this thread. It's not quite 6AM here yet so this site's transmission specialist isn't likely to be by real soon as he does still work full time on them and also in this is EST time zone which is GMT -5 hours if know the layout of that. It needs professional help as far as I can see with the knowledge and tools to repair this that don't seem to be near where you are, Tom

Yeah I dont for a second doubt that a professional shop will be needed to fix whatever the issue my be. I can get an OBD2 readon on Monday to see what codes its putting up so hopefully that will be a help. The mechanic was of no real help, he is just contracted by my roadside assistance company to pick the car up and get it to where it needs to be. Given he wasnt going to be able to make any money from repairing it he didnt seem to have the time of day for it. We have 1 reputable mechanic out here in the bush so ive contacted him for assistance. Thanks again Tom

OK - sounds good but still know "reputable" is a big help but doesn't mean every person or shop has all the "code readers" and the tools required that are also up to date to take on anything that comes by. This stuff and a place to work on vehicles is quite costly. BTW (by the way) code readers are available for low cost and limited up to very costly still require understanding what to look for after you find out what it's trying to say. Cheaper ones may not find a code at all so not generally useful for regular owners of cars/vehicle to bear the costs of them quite yet if ever. Good luck. These folks may or may not be able to help suggest where it should go or leave all that up to you? Tom

No. It is completely at random. Once in every 15-20 times when you start the car it MIGHT move a couple of meters before losing power again but its not more or less likely to do it when the engine is cold or hot. Its after midnight here so im off to bed but appreciate the time taken with the replies received so far, much appreciated and I will check back in the morning

Ok, what i would like for you to do is when you feel the problem, put the shifter in manual one and see if it moves then. Gary

Doesnt matter where the shifter is, just revs. Once you rev to 3.5-4,000rpms it sometimes starts to creep forward but only a couple of feet or something before completely losing all power again.

Wouldnt know what I was looking for and cant upload a photo. I dont know the code of the trans but the engine is Z18XER. I found photos of the trans on ebay etc but none of the underside. Its interesting that just 100 miles ago after noticing some oil on the underside I took it to get a seal replaced. Was a transmission seal. They replaced seal and fluid yet the fluid when I checked the level yesterday after the incident is a dirty colour (almost identical in appearance to engine oil). If they claim to have put AUD$26 of oil in transmission would you not expect that to be majority of the capacity therefor be closer to red in colour? Maybe wrong but just a thought I had

Had it towed to a mechanic and diagnosed as needing a new Transmission Drum. Not what I wanted to hear but glad I know what the problem is I guess
