Stumped mechanic, I have a 05 Honda pilot that makes same noise as driving over rumble strip. Sweet spot is 40-45 mph. Torque converter locked up cruising with light acceleration, it will make rumble sound, let off accelerator instantly gone. If you feather the accelerator you can make it last longer.only last for few seconds. Will do it at higher speed but not often. My reading showed axle issues can cause this pulled rear axles tonight, both had bad spots but,not feeling loose replaced anyways not change. Noticed diff fluid was new. Bought for my wife from auto broker. Any help would be appreciated!!

? Moved this to transmission section as I think this may be about trans lock up issues (torque converter) right when it would happen at that speed and throttle/load sensitive with lower RPMs right then less oil pressure (trans) for a time too. Site has a specialist here hopefully can stop by with some insight on this particular vehicle. Some questions: What was it you noticed that you called "bad spots" about axles? Where on axles? Bearing color or "galling" noticed? Rust or evidence of being submerged in WATER? IDK - new didn't change it so apparently more is wrong. Last - Just what do you mean from a "Broker" as the place you bought this? Auction car or a used vehicle dealer? T

Hello, This certainly sounds like a Lock-up issue, the clutch in the converter is chattering, lock-up problems and converter failure is common in these units. Not much can be done, other than maybe a drain and refill of the trans fluid(may or may not help) How many miles? Gary I just reread your post this feels like it coming from the rear of the car? Its all wheel drive?

It's very much coming from the rear, AWD, be checking more and it's starting to look like a bearing issue. Did flush routine before axles. Good part is there cheap from salvage yard.

The noise is coming from the left hand side in the rear. Sometimes even a good bump can make it happen. As far as axle bad spot. When rotating the inner joint they had right spots that would bind up. It came from an auto broker.

You may have to put this on a lift to check it. One very important tip on all-wheel-drive vehicles, the tires and tire size have to be exactly the same, you cant really put different brand tires on all wheel drive cars, even though they may have the same size, they are different, i get at least one job a month in my trans shop due to different tire size. Another tip on honda all-wheel-drive, service the rear differential, anytime i get one in for a service i do the trans and the rear diff, when the fluid gets old the diff could also chatter and give the same like a rough road.
