2007 Hyundai Tiburon - Tranny Issue

2007 Hyundai Tiburon - Tranny Issue Sign In

Vehicle Info:
2007 Hyundai Tiburon
2dr Coupe I4 Auto GS
51,080 miles

Symptoms:
No Reverse, Not shifting correctly, Gears 2-4 slipping, Eventually thuds into 3rd gear and sticks there, Check engine light on (codes: P0700, P0732, & P0734)

Detailed Incidents:
First incident:
Recently I've ran into a problem with my transmission. I first noticed the problem last month before pulling out of my garage. Heard a loud thud when changing into Reverse. At first, didn't think anything of it as I figured the bumper made contact with a shelf in the garage. Proceeded to back out of the driveway and head to work as usual.

Second incident:
Few days later, heard the same noise and knew for a fact there was nothing near my car. At this point I was wondering what the hell could be doing that. (checked underneath the car and the lower motor mount is in pretty bad condition, pretty beat up for some reason). Again, backed out of garage and proceeded to go to work as usual.

Third incident:
A couple weeks later I am heading to a job interview in the morning (interview goes well I might add)... on the way back from the interview as I'm heading down a busy road, my car slips out of 4th gear, and begins reving pretty high... almost 7000 rpms before I turned the radio down and heard it. At this point I am having trouble accelerating as my car feels like it's in neutral and just rolling. All of a sudden as I'm letting off the gas slowly, I hear a loud THUD and it again begins to rev pretty high. I switched over into manual (shift-tronic) to see what gear I'm in and it says 3rd (fail-safe gear) and stuck in 3rd. So I head home and pull all the way into the driveway, not realizing my reverse isn't working anymore either. I went inside and did some research on the issue on the net then checked a few things.

- checked the fluid (tad bit low and a tad dark, but still pink, no metal shavings anywhere)

- went to Autozone and got the CEL codes (P0700 - Some KIA code I was told probably wasn't the issue, P0732 - Pressure solenoid faulty - Incorrect 2nd gear ratio, & P0734 Pressure solenoid faulty - Incorrect 4th gear ratio)

How it currently drives:
I start the car, CEL stays on, No reverse, Take off in 1st gear, car shifts from 1st-2nd with no issues, from 2nd it revs to about 6-8k rpms unless I slowly let off the gas & when I let off it thuds into 3rd gear and sticks there. If i'm really gentle with the gas It will actually make its way into 4th before it ends up just slipping out of 4th and then thuds back into 3rd where again it ends up sticking. If I accidentally park in a flat parking spot or someone is in front of me, I have to fred flinstone my way out of the spot (EMBARRASSING!) Good thing this didn't happen before the interview.. hah!

Conclusion:
I've heard that a lot of older model Tiburons have some internal tranny problems even some recalls but I feel like my issue is probably a sensor/solenoid or something. Anyway, I have been driving it like this for a few weeks and it's getting old so I think I need to fix this before I have major problems!

Questions: (Trust me, I have done massive amounts of research before posting this)

If it is the pressure solenoid, how do I go about isolating the actual faulty solenoid so I can get the part number?

Could it be the Transmission Speed Sensors? or Vehicle Speed Sensor?

If it is the Transmission Speed Sensors, do I need to replace both Input and Output?

Anyone else have this issue and did you resolve it?

Looks like it may need a transmission now since you been driving it with it slipping and burning up the clutches and bands.

It may be an electrical fault with a pressure control solenoid, but now since driving it in that state you probably turned it into a major overhaul.

Need to take it to a transmission shop and let them do some electrical checks to see if the solenoids are being commanded and are functioning properly and to do some pressure checks to see if line pressure and clutch pressures are within specifications.
