This is my first 4WD vehicle and I had the differential fluid and transfer case oil changed at 60,000 everything was fine up to when I took it in for this.

Afterwards, I can drive all around town no problem, but if I get on interstate and get up to 55+ MPH randomly I noticed a noise like something rattle, chains on metal ? I took back to Dealer they just looked at me said that doing the service they did would not cause that kinda problem ? I kept driving it went back and pitch fit for them to at least put on rack ... guess what they found one screw on the skid plate was loose. Dealer said that would not make that noise, but since they tightened it I have not heard it.

My question can simply changing the diff oil cause transmission problems ? I have read somewhere that when you do reg trans fluid change that it can cause "particles" to get in trans and cause problems ? is it the same with dif fluid ?

Changing the differentials' gear oil won't affect the transmission because they are only connected together by the propeller shafts that do not allow the transfer of fluid.

The transfer case is bolted to the rear of the transmission. The transfer case uses 75W-90 gear oil and the transmission uses ATF. Even though they are connected together, they don't share fluids with one another. If they did, you would have a big problem.

Changing the transmission's fluid isn't going to cause particles to get into the transmission unless you dump particles into the transmission. I don't know anyone that would add a handful of sand while filling a transmission with ATF...LOL

Differential fluid is drained and then refilled. That's it. Particles from gear wear in the diff are caught by magnets. If you have sand and water getting into a diff, then you have a sealing problem or the vent is getting underwater.

I'm not sure where your going with this, but if the noise is gone after they tightened the skid plate, that was probably the problem.

Thank you for taking some of your time to reply I greatly appreciate it. Where I am going is Florida LOL.. yes I took the 4 runner in to get maintenance done so I could avoid trouble on road :) Normally this noise would not have bothered me lot I would have waited til it got worse or something fell off, but since I am going to be traveling over 1500 miles I guess I am bit paranoid and my wife is going with me and she has lots of medical issues so having problems on the road with her along would not be good. I am thinking your right that loose screw was prob it... I have only heard a noise since then twice and to be honest I am not sure it is same think I am just paranoid about it now. Probably need to find a good psychiatric forum LOL.. just joking... but thanks again !
