2008 Acura TL - Hard downshifting. Resistance. Sign In

2008
Acura
TL
3.2
~75,000 (or so the dashboard tells me)

This is my first post. Please tell me if I'm posting in the wrong section. I'm also ignorant to how cars operate so please excuse me.

I bought this car used. When decelerating past 2 specific speeds, 37 and 25, I feel the car abruptly downshift and dip a bit throughout the downshift or a split second. After abruptly downshifting past 25 and the sudden dip, there is also a presence of resistance which causes faster deceleration; kind of like engine breaking. Sometimes when accelerating at the moment it's about to dip, the car jerks forward. The worst part is, it's intermittent! I can't replicate this problem with any mechanic because on top of it, it mostly just happens in the city with heavy traffic while driving under low speeds and where I'm quickly and frequently shifting between first, second and third gear rarely passing 30mph. It rarely ever happens when I use a wider range of the gears outside of the city, shifting less frequently.

In attempts to remedy the problem, I have flushed the old transmission fluid, tried auto body alignment and replaced the rear rotors and pads which were constantly rubbing. The last mechanic I consulted who I paid to have the trans flushed and had noticed the rear pads and rotors rubbing, now suspects it's the clutch. Something about the idler and downshifting.

I bought the most expensive extended warranty the dealership was offering and am sure that would be covered but even if you can help me isolate the cause, how can I even prove this to an adjuster?

Thank you for your time and expertise.

Hello,
The transmission in your car is called a BDGA, Is there a check engine lite on? Does the car work ok cold and act up when it gets hot? Have you had it scanned for codes? When you feel the problem happen does your D5 lite start flashing? Gary

Hi Gary,

Sorry for the late response, I was expecting email notifications but never got any.

I do not have a check engine light on. My mechanic told me there's nothing to scan if there's no check engine light. I would say it does tend to start happening when it gets hotter but still it only happens in the inner city. If I drive outside of it, it doesn't happen as frequently and apparently. I do not have any lights flash whatsoever when this happens.

Thanks for your help.

Sorry for no notice of reply made - it's a problem so just keep checking in till that's fixed with the site. Off that topic there can be codes without a lite on so it does need checking IMO. Out of this thread just to tell you notices may not come or check your spam bin on device?

Ya I agree. There is probably nothing stored on the OBD2 side, but there might be codes on the manufacture side lurking. I always do a full system scan on those things.

Searched my spam folder for carjunky and nothing came up. I'll have my mechanic search for codes when I find some new tires for him to install. Any recommendations? I was recommended DWS conti or Toyo.
