2008 Suburban Doesn't Move Sign In

2008 Chevy Suburban with 5.3L, 4wd, base 4-speed auto transmission (4l60e I think). 160k miles.

I was driving the other day. Started accelerating at WOT from a low speed. Vehicle started the 1 to 2 shift at 5.5k RPM normally, but seemingly failed to finish the shift, acting like it went into neutral and allowing the RPMs to briefly touch 6k before I was able to let off. After rolling to a stop, I was unable to get any power to the wheels in any combination of gears or transfer case settings. Towed the thing home, and no change.

The transmission fluid has been changed before, and the fluid still looks to be in good condition with no visible shavings. The fluid level is also appropriate with the engine running and changes significantly between running and not running, which I believe means the pump is operating normally. Nothing else is visually out of the norm on the external of the transmission or transfer case. Diff doesn't appear to be the failure as the driveshaft does not move when in gear. Also checked the fluid level in the transfer case, which appeared to be appropriate.

I've always thought this suburban shifted a little bit harder than I would expect, although I'm not real familiar with these transmissions, our automatic transmissions in general. Possibly related to the current issue.

I imagine something snapped from the high torque event, but I'm not sure what I should go about checking next. I just had the idea to try seeing if the car holds or not in park to help determine if the failure is in or after the transmission. What else should I be checking to get some idea of what has failed? Automatic transmissions and transfer cases are certainly not in my realm of expertise, so any advice you can provide helps.

Thanks for the advice!

Just clear up how a 5.7 engine got in this thing. GM quit that block (SBC) except one more model year TMK in 2000 models (for export) so what is it?? T

Sorry, 5.3L. I knew it was 5.something, I guess my memory failed me.

Editing in original post for clarity.

Hello,
Would like for you to double check the fluid level to make sure it's not Overfull. Have you dropped the pan to see if anything is in the pan? Gary

Re: 2008 Suburban Doesn't Move Sign In

Hey Gary,

With the engine running, it's in the normal fill region. With the engine off, the level is too high (as expected?)

I've hesitated to open the transmission as I'd like to confirm that it is at fault here before opening.

I was able to verify that park still holds the vehicle as expected, which I believe is enough to confirm the transmission is at fault. Is there anything else worth checking before popping off some covers?

Hello,
No covers really on this trans, dropping the pan is the way to go to see if something is breaking up. Gary
