I'm doing a "patch job" basically on a friends auto trans, its a mid to late 90's 4L60-E,the oil pump vane gear (13 vanes) has broken into 3 pieces. My question is,can I replace the 13 vane gear (unavailable to me) with a 10 vane gear?I'm aware of the fluid surging caused by the lesser vane pump design are there any really serious adverse effects to doing this change? The trans sits behind a vortec 6 cyl in a 1/2 ton 4x4.

Thats a no-go. They went to the 13 vane for good reason. Its not unavailable either. Just go on e-bay and you'll find plenty of them. Put a 10 vane in it and you will have issues.

Just curious, but did you determine why the pump rotor is broken?

I believe the pump was put together incorrectly,I found an intense wear groove about midway through the gear center that indicated to me that the converter wasn't seated fully so I got to looking and found the offset center hub as well as the orientation mark I assume.

I just bought a 13 vane kit on ebay for less than 50 bucks for my own trans and I won't suggest you put a 10 vane in a later model unless you like pulling transmissions a lot.
