4T60e transmission Sign In

Hello I have a 95 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 93 4t60e transmission. I do not have 4th gear/ overdrive, the engine is a 3.1 liter there is appoximately 100k mi. on the transmission, when first istalled overdrive was there and functionining then slipping in and out of 3rd to forth at speeds around 50 to 70 then no overdrive was wondering if electronics in the 93 trans are different then 95 and if that may be the problem help would be appreciated. It seems to shift ok from 1st to 3rd gears.

Re: 4T60e transmission Sign In

The 4T60E went through many valve body changes during those years. In 95 they had a modulated torque converter clutch solenoid that didn't appear in the earlier trannies. Some had different gear ratios depending on the vehicles they were in and the options. Sounds to me like you got a mismatch and nothing but problems.

Hello thanks for the reply, I was checking the wire diagrams between the 2 years and noticed the pwm solenoid in the 95 model i also noticed the wiring in the 8 pin connector outside the trans axle along with what the wires wentto inside the transaxle were different out side the box any chance of moving those wires in that connector to coincide with were they should go to match up

Re: 4T60e transmission Sign In

It wouldn't matter. It's the hardware in the control and valve bodies that are different inside the transmission. The PCM is going to be trying to modulate a TCC soleniod that isn't designed to be modulated. Different valve body designs and gear ratios than what the PCM is designed for is going to cause all sorts of wierd problems. 94-95 years was also the switching years for PCM going from OBD1 to OBD2.

The only way to resolve your problem is to fix the mismatch by installing the correct year and application transaxle in it.

Thank you Discrete I was almost at the same conclusion, you brought up some points I hadn't considered just could'nt understand why it functioned okfor months after the install. Had to fish for all posabilities and potential fixes with what I had. Thanks again.
