81 firebird trany problem

81 firebird trany problem Sign In

i have a 81 pontiac firebird with a 307 /automatic
and im having trouble with the trany, lately when i stop it drops out of gear in to neutral
and i have to play with the shifter and give it more gas, it never did that since i bought it several months ago
please help if u can

Have you checked the fluid level?

yes i have and the fluid level is good
i even got my buddy who works at penzoil
to check it and he said it was fine

Then you have some serious internal issues with the trans. You need to get it to a trans specialist for analysis.

Not a trans specialist but have some clue. The front pump needs enough pressure to allow engagement of bands and clutches. They can go weak and as Hammer said a trans place should be able to test the pressure. Near certain the advice will be to overhaul it and if a nice old car it's nice to start off with a major item out of the way.

Dang - have owned a zillion vehicles and would rather when old ones that I want got this right away , enjoy knowing it's done while I have it and not just to sell it!
