Here's a good one for ya , just bought a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Laredo, it has a 4.0 6cyl., with 163000 mi. Bought it to just tinker with, but really hope I don't have to put a lot of money in it, so far I have rewired the fuse panel due to the genius who had it before me wired off road lights to the headlight switch and used "scotch tape" to cover the splices, no, that wasn't a misprint. Anyway this guy tells me that he was going to sell it for 800, figured he clean the motor up with a degreaser before he sold it. Said it "ran great" before he high pressure washed the degreaser off, now, amazingly, it won't shift out of 1st gear. goes into each gear "slot" fine, go like heck in reverse, fluid level is fine, no "burnt" smell, I'm kinda stuck. Any advice? Thanks, Sam

I would start with the basics on this one. Get in there & carefully start taking connectors apart & cleaning them out. Really sounds like you got water somewhere it shouldn't be. Also check all your grounds. A bad ground can definately affect the shifting.......

You need to fiqure out what trans model you have? Asian (toyota) or chrysler. Chrysler would be all mecanical linkage , make sure the linkage moves all the way back when you let off the throttle. Asian trans controlled by cable at throttle , same thing make sure it returns and isn't stuck in full kickdown . Also asian has shift solonoids controlled by the TPS and speed sensor Bob
