92 Ford Ranger A4LD OD problem

I have a 92 Ford Ranger 2WD with a 3.0 engine and the A4LD transmission. The A4LD is a 3 speed automatic with overdrive. I have no problems with gears 1-3 but it will not go into OD at all. I already replaced the 3-4 solenoid with no change. I believe I can borrow an Auto Xray 2000 code reader but does the computer give transmission info on a 1992? Where would I hook up a scanner to read transmission codes on this vehicle? This started all of a sudden. I was driving at about 35 miles an hour and I felt the truck shift fairly hard and after that there was no overdrive although the truck ran fine and showed no other symptoms. At $3 a gallon, I NEED my OD. I would appreciate any and all help with this little problem. I am new to this board and it appeared to delete my question a couple of times. I resubmited the question twice so I now have three questions about the same thing. I only need one answer and two of you have been kind enough to respond and from the credentials I saw, I suspect the correct answer will be waiting for me after I make my deposit. Thank you very much.
