I had the transmission replaces about 9 months ago, and since day-one I've heard a whine from that area while driving down the road. Sounds like gears meshing without oil. :) Pitch/frequency of sound is dependant on vehicle speed, not engine speed, and is not the brakes.

I went back to the transmission shop a couple weeks after I first noticed the noise; and after the mechanic taking me on a hair-raising test drive through a mall parking lot (speeds up to 45MPH), he said he couldn't hear anything (when I could definately hear it, even sitting in the passenger seat).

And now there seems to be this "space"... feels like the CV joints are getting bad, but I just replaced them. I'm thinking the noise has something to do with it, but after what I've already had to deal with at the tranny shop, I'd rather not go back till I have a more definitive idea on what's goin on.

Ideas? Thanks!

The trans shouldn't be making noise. Quick check on that it's full of fluid before you go crazy might be the answer. CV joints do make noise when they are bad even if new (you can have a bad one) but you usually notice them on turns.

Can only suggest that you document your observations with the trans shop as this is NOT normal. T

Thanks Tom, that's what I thought. I've, so far, replaced the brakes, transaxle and entire hub (with bearings), but the "gear whine" noise is still there. All fluids were filled, but I replaced the fluids, filter and cleaned the magnet just to make sure.

I've been looking for the original receipts for the transmission, but can't find them - and I know the people at the tranny shop are going to give me problems; I've heard a lot of bad stories about them from other people... AFTER I had the work done. :(

I think I'll have it checked this week, before bills come in. :) If all works out, I'll let you guys know.
If they give me any problems, I'll name names.
