1994 Mazda 626 2.5L Auto 61K miles For about the past month the trans slips a little when starting from a dead stop. Won't go into drive until around 900-1000 rpm. Once the car is going everything is ok. What's weird is it doesn't happen all the time. Some days everything is ok. Seems to happen more after long drives on the highway. A couple of days ago the hold light kept flashing when I started the car then it stopped. I got the error code off the diag connector. It is code 06 vehicle speed sensor. Can a bad vss cause the problem I'm having? If not any ideas? Thanks

Hello, First, this trans is called a CD4E, this actually is a ford transmission. These units have a problem of the foward drum cracking due to spikes in line pressure, very common on this trans. I think the vss code is the result of the slip on takeoff not the cause. You had stated that your hold light was flashing then it shut off, when there is a transmission code present, the hold light will flash on start up then go out. If everything else works ok when you get going, and reverse is good, i would say that drum is cracked. Gary

Thanks for the info Gary. Yes everything else including reverse works fine. Will something like this get worse? I can deal with the slipping at start up. When it does act up I just keep the rpm up to 900 when stopped so it doesn't slip. Looking around repairs/replacement seems expensive. Also not that it matters I found this on another site. Says the 94 2.5l used a GF trans and the 2.0 used the CD4E? http://www.dustbury.com/626/trans.html Thanks again!

Hello, My source says upto 1993 is the GF4A-EL and 94 thru2002 with a 2.0 or2.5 is a CD4E. I would like to be sure, i dont want to give wrong information. If the car is in the u.s and you can post the vin number, i have a program that will let me i.d the trans. Gary Do you know if you have a bottom pan? The GF4A-EL has one, the CD4E does not have a bottom pan

Gary, yes the pan is on the bottom. Here's a link to a pic of it. http://autoforums.carjunky.com/upload/IMG_7984.JPG

Hello, Ok, This is the GF trans not the CD4E(sorry about that, my source is incorrect). With reverse ok, and once this gets going it shifts ok, we are still looking at a problem with foward clutch. Of course, with anything the more it gets used the worse it will get. Not much can be done with this on the outside. gary

I will let you know how I make out with this. I haven't decided what to do yet. Do you have any idea what something like this would cost? Not looking to dump big $$$ in a 20yr old car. Looks like you hit the nail on the head. I found this after a little more digging. It is for a ford F4AEL trans which they say is based on the Mazda GF4A-EL. It's the exact problem I'm having. " A complaint of slips on start-off in drive, may be worse hot, but works OK in manual second and low is most commonly due to a cracked forward drum housing. The crack is most easily seen from the back, bottom, side of the drum. If the vehicle is driven in drive and allowed to slip for any length of time the forward clutches will burn out. A cracked housing can also create 3-4 bind, burnt band, burnt coast clutch and/or chatter on 1-2 shift, depending how badly the housing is cracked." Ok thanks again for all your help!

Hello, To overhaul this GF trans i would think the range may be about 16 to 1800. The F4AEL is a smaller version of the GF4AEL Trans. Gary
