96 Camry Transmission ID Sign In

How can I tell whether a transmission will fit my 96 Camry (automatic with a 4 cylinder). I've looked at some that look right but I want to be sure. I noticed a tag on all of them that has what looks like either a serial or id number. Can I use this number to ID it properly?

If you are using a tranny out of a different model or year. The best option would be to go to or call a wrecking yard and see if they will check their interchange manual for you. Pretty much all of them need these manuals to do business so they will know what range of vehicles their parts will fit...

Some are not so forth coming with the the info if you aren't buying from them but some will might help you out..... It's really the best option if you aren't installing the exact same tranny as the one your are R&Ring

Re: 96 Camry Transmission ID Sign In

Thanks Sidom. After doing some research and talking to the guys at the transmission shop I learned that Toyota used the same transmission (an A140E which is what I have) from 1983 to 2001. The guys at the shop assured me that if I get one that looks like mine (starter in the same place, wires and cables that match) it's the right one. Good news for me because there was a couple at the yard that were newer and looked to be in very good shape. If it doesn't match I'm going to put it on them to make it right!
