'96 Geo Tracker Clutch Issue Sign In

Hi all,
I just signed up here and am looking for advice or suggestion to what might be going on with my '96 Tracker. The Tracker has about 82,500 miles on it and my neutral safety switch went on it. It was slowly going bad then wouldn't start. I had it towed to a mechanic that i have used several times with no issues. He confirmed it was the switch and had to order one. After they installed it they said it would not go into gear and that I needed a new clutch. I have never had problems getting into gear, never had a "smell" or anything of that sort. They gave me a quote of around $980.00. I said no to that price and asked them to go through the clutch and see if they can find an adjustment and get it in working order. The next day when I called they said they were able to adjust my clutch and it is going into gear. O.K., I am almost done.. =)... So I got it back 6 days ago and it is shifting like crap. 1st and 2nd are REALLY hard to get into and it grinds bad to real bad going into reverse.

Any suggestions on why this would be happening? Something the mechanic adjusted to make me think that my clutch is indeed bad and that he can make extra money off of me? I got a quote from another garage that was about $625.00 for a clutch job (over the phone). The problem is i really don't think that it is need of an entire new clutch, if anything maybe a correct adjustment. I just was looking for some suggestions or ideas as I am a bit wary of my local mechanics this week and want to have a better understanding of what the problem may be before I bring it in this week to be looked at.

Thank you in advance for any help.
