A5HF1 Automatic transmission Reverse slipping / time lag Sign In

I read an article on Link deleted ---- not allowed.

It helped me a lot, , however I am desperate sucker for punishment, and need your advice on the last issue I have. Please will you read and give some pointers if you can?

The problem
Before I attempted opening up my car’s (Hyundai Santa Fe 2007) transmission, the cars symptoms was as follows:
When stationary for a little while in peak traffic, I would “loose” drive, then put the car in park, then back into drive and all was well for some time.
This got progressively worse to the point I had to “limp” the car home (about 8km’s) and parked it.
At this point, the car had permanent very little drive or reverse, I pretty much had to rev the engine quite a lot to get little movement.

What I did as an attempt to fix…
• I decided to open the transmission to at least inspect & replace the filter (knowing you had to split the transmission open to do that).
• When I saw the old filter, it was very blocked, I also noticed little tiny metal pieces, almost like “drill shavings”.
• So I proceeded to inspect the pump for breakages and wear… I could not really see any really bad things there (as with other online videos about this A5HF1 / F4A51 type transmission shown).
• I then decided to look for any worn bearings or other metal parts that may be broken or terribly worn, i.e. removing all clutches and steels which revealed nothing obvious. I am not a transmission expert by far, but from what I have seen online, the clutches had little wear.
• I tried to measure as accurately as I could the clearances which this manual stated for the various clutch packs.
• I did not remove or opened the reduction band or it’s accumulator piston. I could not remove the cover, was stuck, so I did not want to physically damage it in the attempt to remove it, I just put the c-clip back as it was.

• I completely stripped and cleaned the valve body. Tested all the solenoids’ coil resistance as per spec, and also energized them to hear them working. They all seemed fine accept the VPS solenoid, seemed sticky. I rook that apart (noting down how many turns the set screw took to be removed), cleaned it, and put it back together as it was. This seemed to solve the stickiness.
• I then cleaned out the “black carbon sud” which seemed to cover the valve body and lots of areas if the box. ,
• Placed back everything in the reverse order I took them apart. I also had the Mitsubishi Manual (screen shot below).

Current status
• I have since put everything back together and installed the transmission in the car.
• The forward drive now seems to be working perfectly, engages immediately, and gear changes seems smooth and quick.

The problem now
• For Reverse gear, when selecting from park, it seems to engage immediately (very softly).
• But you still need to rev it a bit to get movement going, once there is movement , it sort of works. i.e., there is movement on level surface.
• On a slight incline, it’s just not strong enough to move the vehicle.
• From selecting reverse from Neutral, it does not seem to do the same, but need to recheck.
There are no transmission codes when scanned as before the disassembly started.

For my logical kind of mind, based on the table below, by methodically method of deduction I thought, at least, what cannot be the cause.

• It’s probably not the reduction band because this is on during all the gears and so far all forward gears are working
• It could be, but I’m not sure if it is the Low/Reverse Clutch because this is used in first gear as well, and it seemed perfectly fine.

Does it by deduction mean:?
• The reverse clutch itself is the culprit? And I do actually need new clutches and steels? (meaning I have missed some measurement)
• Could I have accidentally put something In in the wrong order?
• What have I missed?

Hello,
Sounds like the reverse clutch may be your issue. I believe it's in the large drum in the back where the rear cover is. Did you Air check the clutch packs? The reduction band is always on and comes off in 5th gear. Gary, Sorry for late reply, my shop is packed

Hey gsferraro,
Not a problem at all. Thank you very much for your reply.
I'm not 100 percent sure what you mean by Air check the clutches.
Is there perhaps a video link to how to do this?

Hello,
You blow about 50 psi of air through the feed hole that applies the clutch, you do this to check for leaks in the circuit.
Google Air checking a transmission and you should get a quick video. Gary

Re: A5HF1 Automatic transmission Reverse slipping / time lag Sign In

Hi Gary,

Ah I see will do that.

I did notice in the Hyundai Manual some pressure checks you can do while the car is on the lift while revving the engine at 2550 , but unfortunately I don't have access to a lift , bit scary doing that on tripod stands.

Suppose, Come to think of it, there is one thing I did not mention. I did not replace any seals or gaskets accept for the pump. I did notice when I took off the valve body for the first time, that the gasket had a small "knick" / "cut" in it in once place. I did take a picture of it, but it is difficult to see. The pic I have is what I took just after removal, but touched it a few times so there are a few smudges.

Those picture links require giving up personal info to be able to view them so that is not something we can do.

You can use the site's picture hosting software if you like.

Hi Gary,

Finally got round to registering the link for the photo.

Also watched some videos on the air checking, I definitely did not do that before I reassembled the box.

Drove the car a gain a few times after pouring some ATM additive (pic below), "falsely" hoping the reverse will fix it self / will show some signs of life.

What did happen this morn, when putting in reverse, it did try to go on it's own this ,but was not strong enough. revving it got it going with a shudder, then shudder went away, but it is still not 100%.

On the positive, driving forward, it does seem better than ever. The manual shift option also works now which did not usually.

I also saw some stuff on ebay, but we cant get it here in SA (well not easily), is Lube guard Dr tranny shudder fix

I removed you link as they are not allowed here.

Also please reduce the size of the picture by 50%. That is very easy to do with the site software.
