Automatic Shifter Issue

I have an 07 Chrylser 300 AWD Touring, and just yesterday it started to have a problem where I'd start to go in drive (automatic) and it'd get up to about 35MPH and 3000 RPMS but all of a sudden it'd start shaking as if I was repeatedly tapping the breaks hard. So I ease off, and it just coasts at about 2700 RPMS...also, no matter how hard I hold the pedal down the RPMs won't go any higher than 3000. Other things that started up with this problem: Car takes off a lot quicker upon pressing the gas, car slows down a lot faster when off the gas, won't let me put it into manual shifting. Also, normally when I turn on my car the RPMs sit at about 1500 until I put it into gear, in which point they go down to 700-800, but now as soon as I turn it on they rev up and immediately (in park) fall down to that 700-800 range. PLEASE help if you know what's going on!

Well when I put it in neutral it revs up just fine, but in drive it stops at 3000 RPMs! Yes, and it's a 3.5L v6

You should get it scanned and write down the code(s). May give you clues where to start diagnosing your problem. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

You are well advised already with DS here and just poking my nose in. You just admitted you've ignored your Check Engine Light (CEL or MIL) for some time because it didn't explode on you so just kept going and likely the first problem has caused more problems. Get the codes read and write the #s down as he suggested. Several auto parts outlets will read them for free but you may now need higher end equipment for codes and pay for just having them read. From that you take the information stored and pick a plan of the fix. The reason for posting the #s is because the now common "free" readings by parts places seem to be too motivated to sell parts right away rather than the full diagnosis of the issues. The codes are a direction of where problems are NOT smart enough yet to tell you exactly what to do or fix so fast. Read your owner's manual. Tell me it says to ignore warnings anywhere in it! T

I didn't exactly ignore the light, it's just that the code it was putting out was a gas cap code and it would randomly be on even if there was nothing wrong. It never stayed on for extended periods of time; it was random.

Lights do not go on for no reason. Those people just weren't capable of diagnosing it correctly. There are no codes that specifically indicate a gas cap problem. mizichael - In post #5 here you stated you didn't even know how to get the codes and now said XYZ about the gas cap that can throw a code if missing, left loose or defective - even sometimes swapped mistakenly at a filling station. It came back periodically now you are saying but was indicating something isn't right. That's the point. By odds that issue has caused another so it's time to get real readings and diagnosis of them or this will get no place, T

All I meant by that was that I don't personally know how to get the codes, but the dealership I got it from scanned it while I was there and it didn't show that anything was actually wrong. But yes, I know to bring it in to have the code read, and probably just to have everything checked out. I'll be sure to let you know what it was once I know.

I don't know what went wrong that first time? If for some reason there wasn't anything to read or "pending" info you might be told it COULD be a silly as a gas cap being loose or something and to come back if the light comes on again. My guess is something with evaporative emissions isn't right and doesn't misbehave over the initial issue but probably related. Just have to do it again and start ruling things out. No, most people wouldn't read their own codes on model year 1996 for all need the readers of varying qualities and then interpret where to go from there. So just go get yet another reading with the #s not just anyone's interpretation of what to do unless you let the whole job go then let the tech take care of it entirely. This could be all unrelated to intial reading so start from now, T

Well, the thing is there might be an evap code in there, so the light would be on. But if the computer found another problem, you wouldn't know because the light is already on. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
