Bad ball joint after transmission replacement

Transmission shop rebuilt our transmission. Picked it up, clunking noise, took it back, and they said a bad bearing. Second time we picked it up, new problems arose. Vibration, and a sharp pull to the right. Our regular mechanic said we have a bad upper right ball joint. It did not do this before we had the transmission work done. We know that they pulled the transmission twice, which I assume means taking the front end apart somewhat. Could this have impacted a perhaps already worn ball joint? Our regular mechanic said there is no way to know, but I am frustrated. It did not have the vibration and pull to the right before we took it in, and now it does. Would love some to hear some thoughts on this.

What is the year, make, model, and engine size of this vehicle? Which ball joint is because claimed to be bad? Usually ball joints problems don't cause a pull or vibrations. They can make noise and cause cluncking noises when hitting bumps when they wear out. In extreme cases a worn out joint can come apart and cause you to lose control of the vehicle. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

thank you! Upper right ball joint. It is a 2001 Mercury Villager V6 FWD. I mentioned ball joint because that is what our regular mechanic is saying needs to be replaced (that and our tires, which we knew about). Are there other things that could cause a van to suddenly have a wobble in the steering wheel and sharp turn to the right, after the front end was taken apart twice ? I just know that this problem did not exist, then the transmission was pulled twice, and now the problem does exist. We took to my regular mechanic, and he basically said, well you need new tired and that will make a big difference. But, we needed new tires before (they are not at the end of their life, just coming due). I know it is an old car, we were a little concerned about it being taken apart twice, when there was a problem after the first repair. They told us it took so long, because it was harder to pull the trannie than they anticipated. Just concerned with this old car, that when they took it apart twice something maybe already worn, bit the dust. Just guessing. All I know it, no wobble in my steering wheel before, and now there is. Has to be a logical explanation.

Three things that I know of can cause a vehicle to pull. Tires, brakes, or alignment. To get the transmission out, they had to of pulled the joints to get the CV axles out. Was the vehicle put on an alignment machine after they did the transmission work. If the ball joint is bad, it should be replaced regardless. The joint could of been damaged when they pulled the axles, but you would need absolute proof of that. After the joint is repaired, the tires should be done and the alignment checked after the new tires are put on. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Wobble: Tires since you already know they are going if not on the same wheel could do a lot if not routinely rotated and even might fight with each other, pull etc., Pull to one side the same as DS: Brakes, tires and alignment and all parts known good. Just taking a caliper off some rotors will tilt with dirt/rust flakes behind them and not set back on true. Since you said this was difficult to remove it might have more wrong then just a transmission and now you know + alignments are part of doing a lot things and should know that up front or included in the job estimate. If then a bad part shows up I say it's hard to blame anyone unless you were sure it was perfect before or something. Hard to show fault with this. Stuff happens in the course of repairs and that was invasive to the vehicle, T

Thank you so much! It was a 140 repair, and the transmission shop kindly agreed to cover that. It was probably wonky already (and dangerous!), so we really appreciate them doing that, and both of your kindnesses in responding. Much appreciated.
