Bolt pattern Sign In

I'm wondering if a mustang t5 tranny has the same bolt pattern as the jeep t5. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I have a 79 cj7 and the transmission is a 4x4 t5. I'm not concerned about the 4 wheel drive right now. Just need to get back on the road. I've heard the mustang transmission is better than jeep so just curious if that's the way to go.

Not concerned about the 4 wheel drive?

You can't put a 2WD trans in a 4WD truck.

Re: Bolt pattern Sign In

Even if i don't connect the front drive shaft? If i remove the front drive shaft completely it should work wouldn't it?

Re: Bolt pattern Sign In

No, they are entirely different. You have a transfer case attached to the transmission, right?

I do yes. Just having any impossible time finding a transmission. It's a borg warner t5. Can't find them anywhere unless i want to spend over 2000 bucks.

It is what it is.

They cost that much for a reason. The seller knows how rare they are.

Can't you have yours rebuilt?

This was when AMC (American Motors Corporation) was building "Jeeps and more" even the "CJ series." I've seen OE Audi engines in assorted AMC products so no surprises. Cost that much not surprised either,

Re: Bolt pattern Sign In

Yup. That's the issue I'm having. Rebuild would cost the same so guess I'm screwed lol.

Re: Bolt pattern Sign In

Gary is site's designated trans specialist may be by.
#1 issue is and I love these things for some nutty reason is it's an AMC. Company was struggling bad for its life only Jeep division holding it together at all. They are wildly known for fitting in parts from whatever was available cheap no doubt new to roll off vehicles. This era you might have to bring old parts in and match them up as most everything was made by another motor company U-joints you matched up at a counter so can't say about driveshafts - match them up too I'm sure.

Now at age you probably don't know if whole assemblies are different somewhere along the way but fit.

To me - these were the last real chassis of a Civilian Jeep (hence named CJ) with some stuff still left over from WWII especially steering geometry needed a sense of humor.

It can't be just me you had to match stuff up with AMC's later vehicles and not a clue how you do that without parts in front of you?

Re: Bolt pattern Sign In

I'm not sure of your mechanical ability but if you aren't planning on doing anything with the tranny that went bad, tear it apart and check it out.....
Those aren't as complex as you may think they are....one good trick to know is chassis grease works great to hold little needle bearings in place on reassembly...

If you are planning on fixing it eventually then....you may want to think twice
