Clutch problem

1995 Jeep YJ Wrangler, 2.5L 4 cyl., 5 speed manual tranny, 101,000 miles. My problem is with the clutch. When first started everything works as it should. But after reaching full operating temp., and especially if stopping and starting, as in town driving, when you activate and release the clutch, the peddle does not return all the way up, and may stay 1/4 to 1/3 the way down. The clutch is not slipping. I checked the distance from the bell housing to the throw-out bearing arm and it is the same distance when the problem occurs as when it is not occuring, so the pressure plate and throw-out bearing can be ruled out I believe. It has a hydraulic clutch operating system. There is no fluid leakage at the slave cylinder or at the master cylinder. I read that moisture in the fluid can cause this to happen as it turns to vapor when the slave is hot and causes like an air pocket. So I replaced all the fluid and bled the system. It still does the same thing. As it only happens once the engine/tranny are hot, I thought it would have to be at the slave cylinder because the master cylinder up on the firewall doesn't get that hot. But if there was fluid passing by the plunger on the slave, I would have a fluid leak wouldn't I?? They tell me there is a valve in the master cylinder that opens and closes in the first 1/32" of travel that allows the returning fluid to go back into the master cylinder reservoir. Could that be the problem. Bottom line is this. The master cylinder replacement cost is $47. The slave cylinder replacement cost is $61. I really don't want to buy both when I am sure only one is bad. Which one should I replace first?

Well its been two days and no one has responded so I thought hard and decided to replace the master cylinder first. Turns out I was correct. Everything is back to normal. Thanks for all the help.
