Ford Focus 2004 transmission? Relay?

A bit puzzled. When driving today the car lurched forward, I thought it may have been a transmission slip. Actually my first instinct was to turn off the air conditioner. (Not sure why) After it happened again though I was thinking transmission. The strange part is when I am at a stoplight I hear a relay clicking. The clicking stops as soon as I begin to accelerate. If I put the car in neutral the clicking will stop. Any ideas which relay this may be? And if it could be related to the jerking issue. We were traveling and the jerk only happened twice in a 3 hour trip. Thanks for any ideas!

? It's only happened twice and otherwise fine? Hard to blame much of anything yet. Suggest you get code readings even if CEL/Engine light is off for pending codes and post the #s retrieved, T

Had a mechanic friend read codes today. Nothing stored at all.

OK - It's possible for a fluke and nothing stored or wrong? Just pay attention - do what you should do anyway in all routine services, check all fluids and wait and see. It's just going to be impossible to chase down something that isn't there at all when checked, T

Transmission fluid is fine, I'll change the filter. The one thing it was doing consistently is trying to cut off if it's not in neutral at a stoplight. And a relay is clicking. If I put it in neutral the relay stops clicking.

? So it's running fine just a relay still clicks away - right? Can you find which one or out of sight and unknown? I'm not sure but might be a transmission related issue or a system for some other reason but can't see why "N" other than the switch such that car wont start unless in "P" or "N" is involved but then it would quit it in "P" as well. May move this whole thread to transmission section as it just might be a code only certain code readers would find going on and site has an expert in just that. Would be nice to know just which one? Do brake lights work properly and in a safe spot will this car start if you purposely shut it off and put it in "D" for a test? It never should or need to focus on that if so, T

I deleted your second question and moved your original to the transmission category. We don't want duplicate questions for the same problem. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Hello, Does this try to stall when cold? or only hot, you may have a lock up issue and possible the clicking your hearing is a solenoid buzz. Gary

Not sure. It was hot when we were driving and it did the jerking thing twice. It's not always stalling. Everything is very intermittent. We decided to chance it and drive it home today (we were 3 hours away) and it never did anything. No jerking, clicking, nothing.

Hello, when you were driving and the car was jerking, was it when slowing down to a stop or while you were driving, if it was while you were driving, what speed did it occur. Gary

Hi. We were just driving at probably 45 mph. That was over a week ago and it actually hasn't done the jerk since. The relay stopped ticking as well for a few days and then began ticking again. After I heard the ticking I located which relay it was and it was the battery saver relay. I had my husband take apart the connections to the battery and alternator and check for loose connections and corrosion. He found one connection to the battery that was a bit frayed and corroded. He cleaned that up and reconnected it. The relay has not been clicking since, but don't know if that actually solved the problem, as it had stopped before for a few days. Time will tell I suppose.... Still not sure about the jerk. It only happened two times.

Husband cleaned up battery connections and clicking stopped for a week. Then today clicked again! We actually went on another little road trip and the car has done great! It only clicks in drive, not neutral. So that may be a clue. It's strange. Car is not trying to stall and it starts fine.
