Metal shavings in gearbox?? Sign In

Hello all, looking for some advice-
About two weeks ago, my car started making a Groaning noise when turning. I immediately took it to a mechanic Who said my power steering pump was bad. He replaced my power steering pump and flushed my power steering fluid. He also replaced the filter. However, he told me today that the car is still making the groaning noise and that I have metal shavings in the gearbox inside of my car. He is unable to fix it because he has a bad back. Is this something I can clean out myself or Is this going to be related to another problem? Any idea how much this costs to fix? Thank you

What happened to the old pump? Did the pump come apart and cause metal to be circulated in the system? The LR2 has a rack and pinion. If the system is full of metal shavings, the rack and pinion needs to be replaced. You'll never get all the shaving out of it unless you take it apart. Another thing to consider is if metal shavings made its way into the rack, it would of clogged up the holes in the spool valve. You should be having loss of power steering assist issues.

I think you need to get a second opinion from a reputable repair shop.

It is my understanding the wrong power steering fluid was put in my car, causing the noise. The pump hasn't gone out at the time I had it replaced, but he said it was near failure. It had metal in it as well. He did say I may need a new rack and pinion, but i never noticed any type of steering problem, never noticed a problem at all actually, just the noise.

Just understand if there was metal circulating in the system, it is probably in the rack also. You may need to flush it out multiple times and replace the filter again. Then you'll have to see how the rack does. Without hearing the noise, can't really give you any other advice.
