New problem with Transmission Sign In

Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2003 3.5L AWD is still having problems with the transmission. We got a used Transmission and when putting it in we messed up the front pump. We got the front pump fixed and put the transmission in the right way this time. We have checked the Transmission fluid and it is full, we have checked the torque converter and it is on tight but the transmission is not going into gear smoothly and this morning the top speed it would move is 20mph. What do we need to check now? Been dealing with this for 2 months now really ready to set the thing on fire!!!!!!!!

Re: New problem with Transmission Sign In

Arggh. #1 - this is not my specialty and never was comprehensive with many but have a good clue. If when the first install smashed up the pump who knows now what could have been damaged? It's used and that alone is a risk. Most salvage yards will give some warranty but not for an improper installation and not sure if more than 30 days.

IDK? Are you ready to have a trans specialty shop take a look at it? This "top speed of 20 mph" is that slipping or what? Wouldn't take long if slipping to burn out a good one.

It's just IMO but this just sounds like the nightmare it is,

Re: New problem with Transmission Sign In

I just want to know is there something we can check. Or is there something we didn't do after putting it in. It drove fine for a couple of days other that it was shifting hard from the start and sometimes it would random down shift very fast then back up again.

Re: New problem with Transmission Sign In

No slipping just acts now like it will not shift any higher that 1st gear

Re: New problem with Transmission Sign In

Unless this has dual ranges I don't know of a proper set up that would only go 20mph in low gear. This is now such a mess of unknowns beginning with being used (most are just good guesses by the yards) and then troubles with install as already said.

Why are you so reluctant to let a specialty shop either check it out or redo it right except of course it will cost lots more bucks and this attempts costs are just a waste,

How many quarts of transmission fluid does a transmission take? He just checked the fluid again and it was low.

Re: New problem with Transmission Sign In

Tom, probably cause they don't have the money to spend to have someone else fix it, but looks like that backfired. Now they will be spending more money in the long run.

Check engine light on? Any trouble codes stored related to the transmission?

What was the original problem with the old transmission?

Did you flush out or replace the transmission oil cooler before installing your new transmission?

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Re: New problem with Transmission Sign In

Agreed DS - this job went bad from the get go and got worse.

Kenna - did look up capacity but go by what's listed in an owner's manual before this junky info. Said it called for.......................
"
Application:
Transmission model AW30-40LE

AW30-40LE transService change only - 2.1 quarts. Total refill - 9.8 quarts."

*****************************

That is barely helpful without knowing how much was possibly in a converter still if not totally empty when you started and should have dumped all oil out of everywhere - trans cooler and all AND counted how many you put in.

When just a partial reason or changing just a filter you go by how much comes out and then shift thru gears and check it right away then again when warm usually.

This is in need of pro help. DS just mentioned codes too. For all I know a sensor or limiter on this isn't working and it's in some kind of 'default' or 'limp' mode and I just don't have info available for any of that.

Again, this attempt to save a buck (plenty of bucks) has failed now over 2 months on it. Get help or give up is about all I can say,

Until it's full.

Since this transmission has never been stone empty, the capacity is irrelevant. Fill it to the cold mark on the stick, run it and check it again.

Re: New problem with Transmission Sign In

We have checked the fluid cold and hot. We have put 8 quarts of Transmission fluid in it. our last resort we plan to take it back out and have the transmission check again by a pro. The problem with the last one was we lost R and D. Yes it is a money issue because we are both Disabled and on a fixed income. But this is getting way over our heads and will have to get professional help with it. I Thank everyone for youre help and input. Will let you all know how it goes.
