Noticeably hard downshift on automatic transmission Sign In

I just got a hand-me-down 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe, I don't off hand know which engine size it is, but it has 197k miles on it.

It's running quite well, and the only problem with the drive train that I've noticed is a intermittent hard downshift that causes a subtle impact sounding noise and a slight lurch of the vehicle, each time it happens.. it happened multiple times during a 2-3 mile trip around town.

I can't say for sure which gears are involved, it's either from 3 to 2 or 2 to 1

I haven't checked the transmission fluid level yet.

if it is a sign of greater problems to come, I want to get this fixed before it becomes expensive.

Thanks for any tips

First things to do is make sure fluid level is properly filled noting clean then check engine/trans mounts.
"Hand-me-down" Does that mean you know the maintenance history quite well too? If never thru an overhaul @ ~ 200k I say it owes you nothing really as it does wear some normally with use,

Oh certainly doesn't owe me anything, this is the original transmission.

I'm just hoping to get some preventative advice to avoid the cost of a complete transmission overhaul as you put it.

I'll post what I find in the transmission fluid reservoir soon

Yes - fluid level AND the mounts! If engine and trans can move too much it could make it feel like hard shifting - worth ruling out.
I never specialized in trans but had the full course of study with the principles of operation and what controls what and when.

Still the mechanical thing is bands, drums and clutches even though in fluid do take some wear even as easy as you drive or on time care of them there is a point unknown when up there in miles it would need that stuff new again if not more assorted things.

Personally owned many over 200K vehicles with known orig transmissions and known wildly cared for from new but when given a choice (had several cars) of which one to take on a long trip the 200K ones scare me a lot more unless certain things were known done take the best bet vehicle type thing.

Nobody want troubles away from your home base. You said it that it really owes you nothing but doesn't mean it needs it right now,

Do transmission specialists do some sort of preventative maintenance typically?

Do you mean for their own or for biz? I can't speak for every tech what they do for themselves but absolutely a trans tech should or would offer that service, change out fluid, check for codes now and any visual troubles or more.

Other techs and shops do also just in many cases it's lots more practical to choose one area to concentrate on. Each area or field of work requires more tools and more space and some is so seasonal like A/C in some places you waste a lot of space and no biz off season but paying to have all the stuff year round.

You can maximize life of things with caring for things then sometimes you do everything and stuff happens anywayCrazy
