Pathfinder wont shift out of park. Sign In

My 2003 Nissan Pathfinder Chilkoot will not shift out of park unless I use a screwdriver in the shift lock bypass little hole thing. I have been reviewing forums with similar issues for about a week. I am pretty sure that the issue is the relay for the shift lock solenoid. I checked the brake lights and brake light fuse and they are good. There is no clicking sound when I press the brake while in park, which is why i am assuming the issue is the relay. I got a some used relays from the pick your part but I don't know where the relay is located. Can someone please advise me where the relay for the shift lock solenoid is on my pathfinder?

You've got to be kidding. What makes you think it even has a relay, never mind that you could just take some arbitrary relay and use it.

There is no relay in this circuit. You are likely looking at a new shifter assembly.

I thought that it might be the relay from reviewing forums focused on this issue. I saw a youTube video link deleted ........... not allowed of a 2001 pathfinder with the identical issue mine has. That shifter assembly had a relay located conveniently right there beside the solenoid. Buddy plugged a new relay in and it worked good as new. I just assumed on my 03 the relay was moved to a different location.

After speaking to a Nissan technician yesterday I feel I have new game plan. He wasn't sure which relay was for the shifter either so he tried swapping out a few of the relays under the hood. Ultimately said to try the ones inside the vehicle next to the fuses behind the change compartment (just above the hood release). So he said to try to swap those out to see if they are the relay for the shifter. Then he suggested I get a multimeter and test the wires going to the solenoid. That, if there is power then the issue is the solenoid and if there is not power then the issue is the relay.

OK, apparently you are not paying any attention to what I'm telling you so it appears you will be fixing this yourself.

There is no relay in the circuit

well I just wanted to bring everything to the table that I have heard to date. I appreciate your feedback. So your saying that I have to replace the entire shift assembly?

Maybe I can pull one off a wrecker?

You can see if the solenoid is sold separately but I don't believe it is. The shifters are not real expensive. Check with the dealer.
Just make sure the power is coming out of the brake light switch when depressed on the green with white wire. That wire goes directly to the solenoid in the console.
