Pontiac Fiero Transmission Problem

I have a 1984 Pontiac fiero se 4 cyl 2.5 liter. Just recently when I was shifting from 4th gear to third gear something popped. Now the transmission wont shift but it is stuck in 4th gear. The gear stick will move freely from only 4th to third but no response is evident, it stays in 4th. Is my problem inside the transmission or a linkage problem? Is it a major or minor problem?

What I suggest is to have a look at the external shift mechanism at the transmission and under the console. Maybe have a helper try shifting the transmission through all the gears while you’re watching the shift levers at the transmission. (No I don’t mean going down the road but with the car in the lane-way and the engine off. LOL) You may see that a cable has popped out of its retainer? As you move the shifter through 1st and 2nd or 3rd and 4th you should see equal movement on one of the levers in a pivoting movement. As you move the shifter from 2nd to 3rd you should see and in and out movement of the pivot. What I’m hoping you’ll see is that one of the two cables has come undone from a lever or the outer shell of one cable has came out of it retainer and the whole cable is moving instead of just the inner portion of the cable. Hopefully that made sense? But if things look ok externally then you’re going inside the trans and that means removing it form the car. This isn’t a great diagram but hopefully it’ll be of some help?
