Seat Ibiza Se Tsi S-A 2012 Automatic Transmission Issue Sign In

Hi there,

Just a bit of backdrop,
The car is mostly driven for short journeys, about 7k miles a year. I bought the car in 2018.
The car had an MOT at the end of January and passed with brake pad, brake disc and tyre advisories.
The car had a full service in September 2021 at an independent garage.
The car also underwent a PAS pump replacement around the same time for £624. The car has seemed to be fine up until a week ago.

In the last week when I drove the car, at random times the car began to rev without accelerating. It has gotten progressively worse as I have driven the car the last two times (short journeys). Although it happens sporadicly, the most recent time I have had to pull over and accelerate from 0.

This has all happened without any warning lights on the dashboard.

So yesterday I got a mobile mechanic to come out to look at it and he got fault codes when diagnosing it, when we drove the car together the fault codes disappeared (changed to pass) even though the revving occurred in that 5 minute trip twice.
He also checked the fuses and they seemed fine.

He then looked under the car and it looked like there had been an oil leak but because of areas of rust the exact place couldn't be identified.

The mechanic didn't seem to understand what the codes meant but recommended getting a second opinion before he said we should commit filling the transmission fluid to find a leak for £150.

Is it possible that there has been a transmission fluid leak and the reason the car cant reliably switch gears? I haven't noticed any fresh red stains on the driveway due to the already discoloured nature of it and also because its a shared drive. But mainly as im never really looking for it I might have missed it, so I cannot say for sure.

When I called a separate mechanic he seemed to think the whole transmission will probably need to be replaced and would cost around £2000.

Here are the codes that showed during the diagnostic;-

01315:004 - Passive/Sporadic - Transmission control module (TCM) no signal/communication

00819:002 - Active/ static - High pressure sensor - Lower limit not reached

U010100 - Passive/Sporadic - Lost communication with TCM

The cars value is about £5000 according to similar cars on the autotrader website. So I dont know if i should get a refurbished transmission if it is the case that it needs to be replaced.

Obviously I'm not very knowledgable about this so if anyone could provide any advice or help I would be very grateful.
Thank you for your time,
Marcus

Hi, Just know this is a US based site info probably even to our site specialist in transmissions may not have detailed info as it's not sold here.
If you can read some "operator's manual" find out how fluid level is checked might be helpful if a dipstick say what the color and or odor is like put a drop on white paper.

Rust causing a leak. Yes it can in anything but did you look at that area was it flaking rust there? Dry now? Just it's possible but not so likely if you can think of a cause or general condition if you saw well underside of this.
BTW readers fresh to the minute the British pound is today a $1.25 US Dollars costs were mentioned,

T

Hi T,

I appreciate the reply even though you wouldn't have reason to be familiar with it because car isn't sold in the US.
Unfortunately I found out that its an enclosed system and i'm unable to check the fluid levels with a dipstick without raising the car and opening the valve on the bottom of the transmission.

There doesnt seem to be any flaking but I dont know if its one of the fluid lines or seals. It is dry currently, which would mean its empty, but if thats the case why would it be playing up after all this time. Either way il try looking on a forum in a country where the car is sold haha

Credit to this forum for showing up high in the results, after looking through some other peoples problems, people seem to get pretty trustworthy responses,

thanks again for the reply,

Marcus

We have a resident trans expert that will be along eventually. He may or may not be familiar with it but it's worth waiting to find out.
His name is Gary (gsferraro)
