Seized selector shaft?

2003 Kia Rio (Automatic) 1.5L/140k Any ideas what would spontaneously cause the selector shaft to seize up on an FWD automatic? The car has been sitting for about a year due to a blown engine but the transmission should be fine, and until a few days ago it always shifted freely when I needed to push the car out of the way. This last time it sat for about 2 months in park and now won't budge. Plenty of fluid in the trans. I removed the shift cable so I know that's not an issue, it's the actual shaft on the transmission that's locked up solid. I'm a decent shade tree mechanic but I know very little about troubleshooting trans issues. Appreciate any help.

I should add that I may have made things worse by trying to 'free' the shaft with a breaker bar... It did turn, grudgingly, the car stayed in park until I bumped it with my other car, now it's out of park and will roll but I can't turn the shaft counterclockwise as the nut just backs off instead of turning the shaft.

Hello, Question, is the shifter on top of the trans or on the side? also, going through the shifter is there a plastic switch(which should be bolted to the case). Gary

Shaft is on the top of the trans, and yes there is the inhibitor switch on the shaft as well. The switch comes loose if I unbolt it but the shaft was still stuck. Well, I got irritated and took a breaker bar to it and just forced it back and forth a million times and slowly the detents for each gear started to re-appear, I can now hear them and feel them. Can also hear the parking pawl linkage as it goes in and out of park. I'm afraid I still may have damaged it since I had no idea how far to turn the shaft until the detents appeared, may have gone too far one way or the other. It's about 50% back to normal, I can actually shift it with the shift lever but it's still way too stiff. Seems like it was just seized up from age or corrosion or whatever, never had this happen on any car, ever.

Ok, sometimes those switches seize up and wont let the shifter move, there actually should be an o-ring on the shaft(you cant see it, its just below where the rod comes out of the case) maybe spray some WD40, if you havent already. Gary
