99 Chevy Malibu 3.1L V6 Automatic Transmission My shifter reads 1,2,3,N,R,P I was driving last night and accidentally bumped the shifter into reverse while driving forward. Here are the problems now: -If i put the car 1st gear it acts like its in park and wont move -if i switch it up to 2nd it will engage but i think its actually going into third gear -If i switch it up to 3rd gear, there is no change. -If i put it in neutral, the car rolls backwards like its in reverse (i have not increased the throttle to see if the speed increases) Reverse and Park work normally.. In a nutshell, I think the car is stuck in 3rd gear (overdrive does not engage either)

It's a 3 speed with a locking torque converter. Doesn't matter really as it has been totally traumatized with shifting to reverse. I think my first check would be to watch this shift while not running but key enabled to see how shifter moves at transmission and if motor mounts are OK and at least in place. Something has to be physically broken not just some textbook issue going on. Not the point but what is with this......... Quoted ">>1,2,3,D,N,R,P<<" -- suggests your "P" indicator is to the right? Either way shifters unless broken don't shift from a forward gear into reverse unless you either push a button or pull column shift levers towards you just so this doesn't happen. If that's broken, worn somehow and was for a while it should have been fixed or this could happen. We have a trans specialist here that hasn't chimed in yet but I suggest you take this or tow this to a transmission specialty shop for the fix and expect about anything from total redo of another transmission and shifter fix or something more simple, T

Hello, Sounds like you did some damage, if it acts like park in manual one, this is the trans locking up in low. Not excatly sure what happened inside but it sounds like the planetary gear set is bad. Gary(sorry for the late response, i got transmissions all over working 15-16 hour days)
