Have a 2004 Mercury Sable V6 with 52k miles transmission stopped unexpectedly while driving on the highway. No warning signs, oil level was ok.

Any codes- even if light is off.
any recent work or maintenance ?
Otherwise pump pressure tests,

Hello,
Anytime you have something like that happen with no warning signs, that usually means something broke or a spline stripped inside the unit. Just make sure the car holds in park, if it rolls look at your axles, if not you have an internal problem. Gary

ok, one more question, you had said the oil level looked ok, is the oil level on the full mark or way above the full mark? Gary

Immediately following the incident when I checked it was very high on the stick. After sitting for a while, I checked it again and it was normal.

Hello,
Sounds like there may be an issue with your torque converter or possibly your pump, looks like either way you will have to get inside this unit to find the problem. Gary
