Transmission fluid issue Sign In

Yesterday I had a friend drain my transmission fluid and put more in and replace the filter because when my gears were shifting it was slipping. I drive a 2003 Subaru Legacy with an automatic transmission. The book said to put 9.8 quarts in, so we did. But we drained far less than that and today my check engine light is on and it smells like the fluid is burning and the slipping is still occuring. Can you please help me with what I should do?

OK, you've made a whole bunch of mistakes here..........
First off, once a transmission has an obvious problem, about all you can accomplish by changing the fluid is to make it a lot worse.
Second, the capacity you have includes the torque converter which does not drain when the pan is dropped so now you have severely overfilled the transmission and probably caused more problems.
It's time to get it to a transmission shop.

When you are changing the engine oil, check the fluid level after the fluid change has been performed. Engine coolant is transferring heat from engine to radiator, radiator is removing heat by forcing through the air, so kindly check the coolant level in the radiator...

Ans what does any of that have to do with the poster's issue?
