Transmission or Torque Converter? Sign In

1996 Ford F150

5.0 L V8

190,000 miles

Alright just posting to see if anyone could possible give me some advice. I was driving my truck and I baby this thing because of gas prices but one day I was about to go on to the interstate and I lost my last gear. Engine would still rev but nothing until I slowed back down to 40 MPH and it would downshift and I would be going again. So I just turned off my overdrive and everything was fine for about 2 months, and then driving down the road suddenly 4th, maybe 3rd and 4th was lost and it was doing the same thing but right out of either 2nd or 3rd gear, so ever since then I've had it parked. Just curious if it could possibly be my torque converter or if i just need a professional to look at it before i try to get an entire tranny from the junkyard

Can you still drive in Reverse? I know on alot of cars/trucks 3rd gear forward and reverse share the same gear. So if your reverse is fine it may actually be the torque converter.

What does the trans fluid color look like and is there a strong smell to it too? If the fluid is the color of rusty water then there is a good chance the trans is burned up....if not, the t/c could be at fault like Carjunky mentioned....also if this is an electronic transmission there is a possibility that the transmission control module could be going out...the brains of it... if it isn't than check the modulator valve, located at the tail or around that area.
