1976 Dodge W200 (Military M885) 318 engine with Automatic Trans and full time 4X4. Transfer case is has Hi, Hi Loc, Neutral, Low, Low Loc During a recent test drive (off road). I had driven the truck forward for probably 100-200 yards when it felt like the trans was slipping, so I stopped, put the truck in Reverse and backed up to our tow vehicle and checked trans fluid. It was low, so we added fluid, checked level and the truck went forward again like it was supposed to. After about 5-10 minutes of driving around, I tried to back up. With the truck in reverse, I can feel it trying to move backward. The engine will start to rev and feels like it is under a load. With the front drive shaft in, I can see the front tires trying to move in revers, but the back tires seem to be pushing forward. The truck will not move. I removed the front drive shaft and the truck does the same thing except after depressing the gas pedal, the truck will jerk a bit and then slowly start moving forward (This is in all 4 transfer case gears except neutral). I have not removed the rear drive shat and re-installed the front shaft to check for operation. I have unhooked the shift linkage to ensure the vehicle is in reverse. Everything works fine when in all the forward gears. I am relatively new to 4x4 and don't know if this is transmission, torque converter, or a transfer case gone bad.

I would gusse you're into tranny issues. I would pull the pan off and inspect the magnet and cut open the filter for signs of metal.. if fluid is black good chance a clutch pack is done.
