Transmission overdrive hard shift

2005 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 4.7l gas. shifts into all gears perfect except overdrive. When I get to 55mph the truck slams into overdrive and chirps the rear wheels, I can speed up before 55mph and drop down a gear until I get to 60-65mph let off the accelerator and it drops into OD without any issues. I can then drive it between 60 and 80 with zero problems. only issue is getting into OD the normal way. Any help would be appreciated.

There are no transmission codes of any kind. Code P0113 was there its a IAT sensor. I bought a new one and corrected the code. no other codes were showing. Truck drives perfect except for the hard shifting into overdrive

Just a comment of little help sorry: Why does this wait till 55 MPH to engage overdrive? IMO and I don't drive all different vehicles all the time but would think with light load would be locking up converter a lot lower speed than that, more like 35-45 MPH. Driving habits many will say don't use OD at all under certain conditions and speeds or towing etc. I also don't get the chirping of tires at all? Yes if you early downshifted a standard and popped the clutch but never happened to me in any automatic the way you described. Are you sure it's wheels/tires making a noise and not something else? T

I am using a Actron CP9125 code reader. Just to help everyone understand the chirping of the tires is caused because the transmission just drops into gear so the tires almost skid. Im wondering if it might be a vacuum hose or something like that. I dont know enough about the newer transmissions to know if it telys on vacuum or if it is told to change by the ECM (computer)

Chirping on call it the upshift IMO would be very unlikely from tires. If it momentarily locked a bit that might. General since forever on when transmissions shift: Doesn't totally matter if it senses an electronic source for info or mechanical except all would be electronic - simply faster and more accurate but monitoring same conditions like throttle position of your foot, intake manifold vacuum is a measure of load on the engine and speed so it should be hanging on too long unless hauling a load of logs up a steep hill or always flooring it up to speed. Down shifts are also sensing load and throttle position and making a choice based on info from all. Not my specialty but studied the concepts of what triggers what. You can select a gear and it would stick to only that on some. At least prior to engine RPM limiters auto transmissions would force an upshift no matter what load based on a "governor" such that RPMs didn't exceed engine's range. In short any vacuum lead would be a problem and in the wrong place lower intake manifold vacuum info telling this it's under more load than it really is. Things computers are smart but can't tell you a hose or something has a leak like that, T

are you sure the cp9125 code reader will read ALL codes I believe it is limited to GENERIC p0001 - p0999. without themanufacturers specific codes its too limited. confirm the harsh engagement is 4th and NOT TCC lock up. I show 2 trans possible for this vehicle do you know which model you have, PS - no vacuum controls- 4th and OD are electric operated.

Mr. Greenleaf all I can tell you is when it hits around 55mph or a little more the transmission shifts into another gear and if I didn't have my seatbelt on my chest would slam into the steering wheel. Im not getting any codes and no one seems to have ever had this problem. I took it to the dealer today and was told it would be $250.00 just to look at it.

Kev2, I took it to the dealer and they checked the codes for me and nothing came up. they said they had not heard of this before and it would be $250.00 just to look at it.

OK - totally not normal from what you just said. IDK now so will suggest wait for Kev2 to come back and or find a trans specialty shop. I'm a bit disappointed with the dealer wanting so much to probably only tell you to redo the whole trans and charge that much to tell you that but do think this isn't going to be cheap. Apologize that I lack specifics for more than general transmission functions and concepts and less about Mopars than others, T

no worries Tom, I'm sure we will be able to solve it and I agree that the dealer will want to rebuild it, they will ignore the fact that you can barely feel all of the other shifts or that there is no noise or anything coming from the transmission. I appreciate the info you have given me.

good info you are getting us the dealer scan and confirming it a 545RFE really helpful - I have a thought esp as you have those 2 questions answered- NOW to confirm and think of a DIYer test.... - a broken spring in the pump body TCC apply circuot - let me confirm. agaiiin need to confirm diaganoises.

not finding alot of info - just the basics, scanner* and pressure gauges, The one issue with TCC spring, that was all AND no easy to do test -YET I will ask and check around...love a challenge. If you have a "tow haul" switch let us know if it makes a difference turned on or off. * professional type with bidirectional

Hello, If you can find someone with a good scan tool like a snap-on, have the look at c.v.i (clutch volume index) value. this is the fill time it takes to apply the clutch, high numbers means worn out clutch pack, the o/d clutch is a weak point on this trans. I had a simlar problem to what your describing, when i was road testing a car on the parkway, it slamed into the last gear(to the point where i was nervous) I dropped the valvebody down opened it and found my solenoid switch valve jammed(cant remember if it was throwing a code).

Ok, I do have a Tow/Haul switch, but I thought all that switch did was to disconnect the Overdrive when you were towing something. I was told by the dealer that if I towed anything over 1000 lbs I needed to use that switch. you talk about killing gas mileage.

I have been told that on this transmission the solenoids are inside the housing and not accessible without taking it out of the car. Also the dealer checked the codes and they showed exactly what my code reader said. Is the Snapon reader better and how much does it cost?

If your looking to change the sol. pack, transmission can stay in the car. Drop the pan and filter(this may have 2 filters, one may be a spin on witch is there for cooler return, that shouldnt be in the way) Drop the valvebody, the sol. pack is bolted to the valvebody, switch it reinstall v/b, filter and pan. (Those 545rfe trans dont really use a pan gasket, silcon will be fine. I would still have the c.v.i checked on the trans.

Maybe you can find a shop with the snap-on scanner( modis or verus even solus is good) .you may want to get this trans checked out by a trans shop. In my opinion unless you have solenoid circuit codes, i would have the car looked at. I also feel dealers dont know that much about the workings of a trans. I have some wholesale accounts that are dealers.
