Transmission problem 1992 GMC C3500

I bought my truck about 2 months ago. I live on the big Island Hawaii. I noticed that at low altitudes My truck would shift into all gears. I live in the mountains, and so I travel from high to low altitudes every day. Coming down from the mountain in the morning my truck would shift hard into 2nd gear and then shift to 3rd with no problem. Then it will not shift into 4th, 5th or over drive. When I get down the mountain and park for a bit then start and drive again it would shift fine into all gears. Now it always shifts as mentioned before. It shifts into 1, hard into 2nd, nice shift into 3rd and will not shift into any higher gears. I do have reverse. What should I do? I would like to do some work on it myself. I know how to use a multimeter and wiring schematics, but the manual I have does not go into detail about transmission trouble shooting. My fluid level is fine and no burnt smell. Fluid looks old and has lost most of its red color.

1992 year and it has 265,859 miles. fluid is not black, but it is not deep red either. it is like redish brown. I bought it from a local auto shop. the owner of the shop put a used trans in it. 6.2 L diesel 2 wheel drive. 1 ton

With that kind of mileage, i wouldn't touch the fluid. You could make it a lot worse doing that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

No, that would be just as bad. The issue is the new fluid full of detergent that will wash away the sludge that is helping seal the servos right now.
