Ok, so I've never had a problem with my transmission at all until tonight. I drive a 1984 Scottsdale. I was coming up on a stoplight (braking)on the highway when suddenly I hear this rattling and quiet grinding sound. I come to a stop and the grinding is very loud. I put the truck in park and the grinding stops. I nervously wait for the green light hoping my truck will go when I shift back into drive, which it does. But I still hear the rattling. I make a few turns and it makes the loud grinding again. I shift into neutral and the grinding stops so I go back into drive and wala....my transmission will no longer move my truck. Luckily I was only two houses from my destination when this happened. Well I tried shifting into 4WD with no luck. All it does is rev up no matter if it's in reverse, Drive or 1 or 2. I can hear it rattle when I put it in any gear though. And now when I put it in park after trying a gear with the engine on, it grinds like hell, but no grinding when in gear. Now keep in mind, my shift indicator needle on the dash broke last week and now just today I see what appears to be a thin wire in the little window. So here's my question......did something become disengaged, unattached? How difficult of a fix will it be? I am not familiar at all with transmissions. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!

? Take a look when you can as it almost sounds like driveshaft fell out/off. Shift indicator is probably a separate issue totally, just a wire a pulley type thing you might find used depending on what broke and how, T
