96 Toyota Avalon Trouble code 770 Sign In

I have a 96 Toyota Avalon 6Cy 3.0 with 223,000 mi the check engine light came on and stayed on for about 1 week and went off. I took it to my friend and he checked the code and found Shift Selonid E code 770 stored in it. Then about 2 weeks later the check engine light came on again. I had just started driving it down the road 1/4 mi from being in the garage over night and the air Temp was about 43F and it came on again. So i stopped by my friend again with the check engine light on and again it was the same Code 770 So what is the problem and how do i fix it, if it is a selonid where do i find it . Thanks for any help

Re: 96 Toyota Avalon Trouble code 770 Sign In

Basically that code pops up when the ECU commands the SL (converter clutch) solenoid, but doesn't see the torque converter clutch engaging. The ECU knows when the torque converter clutch is engaged or slipping by comparing the crankshaft position sensor and the turbine speed sensor signals.

Need to swing into a transmission shop, so they can check the electrical portion of the system which includes the solenoid and to be sure the speed sensor signal isn't glitching. If all that checks out, you either have a problem in the valve body, TCC hydraulic circuit, or the torque converter.
