2001 2500 Ram 4x4 5 speed manual trans 165,000 miles Cummins Diesel engine
Hello guys . I was coming home yesterday and just all the sudden I could not shift into 5th gear . Pulled over and could not shift into any gear . After a couple of minutes I got it to go into 2nd gear , or I should say forced it into gear . Started driving again , but would not go into any gear again . Finally got it in 2nd again and slowly limped the mile or so I was from home . There I again try to shift any gear and it wont go into any gear . Shut the engine down and I found it would easily shift into any and all gears . Started engine back up and again it will not shift . There was not any kind of warning , sound ,jolt or smell or anything strange happen before it did this . To describe what it feels like , it feels like a bent linkage on shifter , it that makes sense . There does not feel to be any difference in the clutch pedal .Would any of you have a guess as to what may have happened ? Or why it shifts easily with engine shut down ? Or could it be a clutch issue ? Thanks for any replies , Larry
PS I think this is the NV4500 transmission

If it shifts ok with engine off and not with engine running, your clutch is no good. Gary

Well I was hoping it was something simple , but it is what it is . Thanks for the quick reply . I don`t know if it`s something I want to try myself . I have never done that before . Thanks again for the reply

Quick question Gary ,
If the master or slave cylinder , or both , was beginning to fail internally ( no visible leaks ) would it maybe act like that ? I ask because today , after sitting for a day , I started truck and it shifted easily through all gears . Did a test drive down the street and everything worked good , shift easy , but when I turned around to return home it began the no shift again . Had to shut down , put in 2nd , start and return home in 2nd again . And it seems to be about the same distance / time I traveled the first day it happened . Could there be some internal failure in hydraulics caused by maybe heat or something ? Just wondering and still hoping it could be something other than the clutch . Thanks , Larry

Are you noticing the amount of free play in the clutch pedal changing as this happens?

Then it's probably NOT the clutch master or slave. You would notice a difference in the pedal.
